Saints/49ers Game Recap: The 30th Anniversary of “The Catch” Was Relived

The New Orleans Saints lost to the San Francisco 49ers 32-36 this past Saturday in what I think a playoff game should be like.  There was the element of excitement, passion, suspense and surprise! You just never know what to expect in a NFC playoff game.

The 49ers’ defense came in with all their guns and ready to take on the Saints’ offense, but it was the 49ers’ offense that gave us the craziest last 9 seconds of the game! 49ers’ QB Alex Smith honed in his enter Joe Montana and we all relived “The Catch” when Smith completed a 14 yard TD pass to Vernon Davis with 9 seconds left in the game.  That catch sealed the deal and the 49ers are going to the NFC Championship.

The San Francisco 49ers will play the New York Giants on Sunday, Jan 22nd at 5:30pm CST for the NFC Championship and ticket to play in the 2012 Super Bowl. Who do you think will win? I dare not pick this one.  It should be a great game!

  1. I am somewhat of a trend player and with that being said there is a key trend I cannot ignore. Teams to beat the defending SB champs in the playoffs have NEVER won their next playoff game. Well my Giants just beat GB and they have looked great over the last 3 games. The trend tells me they will lose to SF next Sunday. I do like SF without that trend anyways and here is why.

The Giants have been on an emotional roller coaster over the past month and they just beat the best team in the regular season on the road. talk about an emotional high but now they have to travel to SF where they lost earlier in the year in a great game 27-20. I look at these Giants and I see last years Jets. Jets got hot late and in the 2nd round upset the best regular season team the Patriots. Then the next week they get their teeth kicked in by Pittsburgh. SF is the toughest team physically in the league and they create turnovers. They will get after Eli all game long and create turnovers. Alex will manage the game and SF special teams and defense will do their part. The best defense in the league gets it done.

  4. The record is actually 2-16 SU since 1970 for teams that are coming off a playoff win over the defending champs, but 0-14 if it is either the divisional or conf championship round, thus excluding Superbowl games....

Here are the games that qualify:
1971-72: Miami beat Baltimore (defending Champs), and lost next game

1974-75: Oakland beat Miami (defending Champs), and lost next game

1976-77: Oakland beat Pittsburgh (defending Champs) and won next game

1977-78: Denver beat Oakland (defending Champ) and lost next game

1984-85: Seattle beat Oakland (defending Champ) and lost next game

1985-86: Giants beat San Fran (defending Champs) and lost next game

1986-87: Washington beat Chicago (defending Champs) and lost next game

1990-91: Giants beat San Fran (defending Champs) and lost next game

1992-93: San Francisco beat Washington (defending Champs) and lost next game

1994-95: San Francisco beat Dallas (defending Champs) and won next game

1995-96: Green Bay beat San Francisco (defending Champs) and lost next game

1996-97: Carolina beat Dallas (defending Champs) and lost next game

2000-01: New Orleans beat St Louis (defending champs) and lost next game

2001-02: Pittsburgh beat Baltimore (defending champs) and lost next game

2005-06: Denver beat New England (defending champs) and lost next game

2007-08: San Diego beat Indy (defending champs) and lost next game

2008-09: Philadelphia beat NY Giants (defending champs) and lost next game

2010-11: Seattle beat New Orelans (defending champs) and lost next game

but NEVER is true if you exclude SB games....0-14 in conference championship or divisional round of playoffs

  5. Since '99 teams teams with a better rushing offense in the regular season are 21-3 ATS in championship games. advantage SF and Baltimore

Teams that were a 7 pt or more dog and won in a divisional playoff game are 2-8 SU in championship games. advantage SF

REGARDLESS OF TRENDS. I HAVE HAD SF SINCE BIRTH AND WON'T BE BACKING OFF THEM HERE AGAINST THE 9-7 GIANTS. EVERYONE YOU TALK WITH OR HEAR TALK ON TV IS ON THE GIANTS. VEGAS DOESN'T BUILD HOTELS EVERYDAY B/C THEY LOSE MONEY. 2/3 OF THE BETTING PUBLIC ARE WRONG 80 PERCENT OF THE TIME. How are the Giants getting points a week after they beat the defending Super Bowl Champs? HMMM? SF wins.

  6. The NFC is hard to pick for me. Should be a great game! You state a lot of interesting factors for sure!
